Description

Frappe ERPNext before 15.119.1 and 16.x before 16.32.0 contains a server-side template injection vulnerability because user-controlled message fields are not validated before template rendering, allowing expressions to run in an unrestricted context. Authenticated attackers holding a common operational role can inject template expressions to read and write arbitrary database data, delete documents, send outbound requests from the server, and send mail from the site.

Executive Summary

Frappe ERPNext versions before 15.119.1 and 16.x before 16.32.0 have a server-side template injection flaw. User-controlled message fields are not validated before template rendering, allowing attackers to inject template expressions. This can execute arbitrary code in an unrestricted context.

Impact Analysis

Authenticated attackers with basic operational roles can exploit this to read or write arbitrary database data, delete documents, send outbound server requests, and send emails from the site. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or service disruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance risks include legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Frappe ERPNext to version 15.119.1 or later if using version 15.x, or to version 16.32.0 or later if using version 16.x. This addresses the server-side template injection vulnerability by validating user-controlled message fields before template rendering.
