Executive Summary

Frappe ERPNext before versions 15.118.2 and 16.x before 16.30.0 has a missing authorization vulnerability. Certain endpoints do not enforce proper authorization checks on item master data, allowing authenticated low-privileged users to read item master data beyond their permitted role.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, review ERPNext access logs for unauthorized calls to item master data endpoints by low-privileged users. Check for endpoints like /api/method/frappe.client.get_list or similar resource-intensive queries involving item master data.

Impact Analysis

Authenticated attackers with low-privileged accounts could access sensitive item master data they are not authorized to view. This could lead to data leaks, unauthorized modifications, or further exploitation of the system depending on the exposed data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements such as GDPR or HIPAA by allowing unauthorized access to sensitive data. Organizations may face legal penalties, loss of trust, and increased scrutiny for failing to protect personal or health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ERPNext to version 15.118.2 or later if using version 15.x, or to 16.30.0 or later if using version 16.x. Review and enforce strict role-based access controls for item master data endpoints.
