Executive Summary

Frappe ERPNext versions before 15.116.0 and 16.x before 16.27.0 have a missing authorization vulnerability. Certain endpoints do not enforce proper authorization checks, allowing authenticated low-privileged attackers to read financial data beyond their permitted role.

Detection Guidance

Detect this vulnerability by checking ERPNext endpoints for improper authorization. Use curl to query endpoints like /api/method/frappe.client.get_list with low-privileged accounts and verify if financial data is accessible. Monitor logs for unauthorized access attempts to sensitive endpoints.

Impact Analysis

Authenticated attackers with low-privileged accounts could access sensitive financial data they are not authorized to view. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized data exposure, and potential misuse of financial information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized access to sensitive financial data. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. Unauthorized exposure risks legal penalties and regulatory fines.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ERPNext to version 15.116.0 or later for v15, or 16.27.0 or later for v16. Review and enforce strict role-based access controls for all endpoints. Audit existing user permissions and revoke unnecessary access to financial data.
