Executive Summary

Frappe ERPNext versions before 15.112.0 and 16.x before 16.23.0 have a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in a public portal form. This form allows unauthenticated users to submit data that is later displayed without proper sanitization. Attackers can inject malicious scripts that execute when staff members view the stored submissions.

Detection Guidance

Check for stored XSS in public portal forms by reviewing submitted content for suspicious markup. Inspect browser sessions of staff who review records for unexpected script execution. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can exploit this to execute arbitrary scripts in the browsers of staff who review the stored form submissions. This could lead to session hijacking, unauthorized data access, or defacement of internal portals.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate GDPR by exposing personal data through script injection or failing to protect user sessions. For HIPAA, it may risk unauthorized access to protected health information if staff systems are compromised.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Frappe ERPNext to version 15.112.0 or later if using 15.x, or to 16.23.0 or later if using 16.x. Disable unauthenticated form submissions in public portals until patched.
