Description

FreeRDP from 3.0.0-beta1 before 3.32.0 contains a use-after-free vulnerability in smartcard handling that allows attackers to access a freed smartcard handle object after an invalid connect operation. Attackers can trigger an invalid smartcard connect operation to cause reuse of the freed handle, leading to memory corruption or crashes.

CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This is a use-after-free vulnerability in FreeRDP versions from 3.0.0-beta1 up to 3.32.0. It occurs when an invalid smartcard connect operation causes a freed smartcard handle object to be reused, leading to memory corruption or crashes.

Detection Guidance

Check FreeRDP version with 'xfreerdp --version' or 'freerdp2 --version'. If version is between 3.0.0-beta1 and 3.31.x, the system is vulnerable. Monitor logs for smartcard-related crashes or memory corruption errors during connection attempts.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could exploit this to cause denial-of-service conditions or execute arbitrary code on affected systems. It may lead to system instability, crashes, or unauthorized access depending on the attacker's goals.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later immediately. Disable smartcard redirection if not needed by setting 'smartcard' to false in FreeRDP configuration files. Block external connections to FreeRDP ports (3389/tcp by default) until patched.
