Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves a hard-coded cryptographic key in the /usr/bin/sysman component of some Moxa industrial computing products. An attacker with adjacent network access could exploit this exposed private key to compromise the confidentiality and integrity of communications.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect the /usr/bin/sysman binary for hard-coded cryptographic keys or certificates. Use commands like strings /usr/bin/sysman | grep -i 'private key' or openssl x509 -in /usr/bin/sysman -text -noout to check for embedded certificates. Monitor network traffic for unusual TLS handshakes or decryption attempts.

Impact Analysis

An unauthenticated attacker could intercept, decrypt, or alter communications, leading to unauthorized access to sensitive data or control of affected systems. This could result in data breaches, operational disruptions, or unauthorized system modifications.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data security) due to unauthorized access to sensitive data. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update or patch the affected Moxa industrial computing products to remove the hard-coded cryptographic key in /usr/bin/sysman. If no patch is available, isolate the systems from adjacent network access and discontinue use until a fix is applied.
