Executive Summary

This vulnerability exists in libsndfile versions up to 1.2.2, specifically in the WAV Parsing component. It involves a use of uninitialized variable in the function wavlike_subchunk_parse within src/wavlike.c. An attacker could manipulate this to exploit the uninitialized memory, potentially leading to unintended behavior or information disclosure.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability allows remote attackers to exploit uninitialized memory, which could result in information leakage or unexpected program behavior. Since the exploit is public, attackers could use it to compromise systems running vulnerable versions of libsndfile. Users should update to the latest version to mitigate this risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or disclosure, which may violate GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations must address this flaw to maintain compliance with these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update libsndfile to the latest version beyond 1.2.2 to address the uninitialized variable issue in the WAV parsing function. If an update is not available, consider disabling or restricting access to applications using libsndfile until a patch is released.
