CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an integer overflow flaw in FreeRDP versions 3.11.0 through 3.31.0. A malicious RDP server can exploit it by sending large positive mapped-video coordinates during video redirection, causing the client to crash due to a signed integer overflow. The client aborts unexpectedly with a SIGABRT signal.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the FreeRDP version on your system. Run: freerdp2 /version or apt list --installed | grep freerdp. If the version is between 3.11.0 and 3.31.1, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If you use FreeRDP with video redirection enabled and connect to a malicious or compromised RDP server, this vulnerability can cause your FreeRDP client to crash unexpectedly. It results in a denial of service but does not allow data theft, code execution, or memory corruption.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily causes denial of service and does not directly impact data confidentiality or integrity. However, repeated crashes could disrupt services, potentially affecting availability requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. No evidence suggests data exposure or compliance violations beyond service disruption.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later immediately. Use your package manager: sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade freerdp2. Avoid connecting to untrusted RDP servers with video redirection enabled (/video flag).
