Description

FreeRDP from 2.3.0 before 3.32.0 contains an infinite loop vulnerability in http_chuncked_read that allows malicious RD Gateways to hang clients by sending incomplete chunked responses. Attackers can send a partial chunk-size line or footer followed by a clean TLS shutdown, causing zero-byte reads to loop forever and freeze the client decoder thread.

Executive Summary

FreeRDP versions 2.3.0 to 3.31.1 contain an infinite loop flaw in the http_chuncked_read function. Malicious RD Gateways can freeze client applications by sending incomplete chunked responses followed by a TLS shutdown. The client's decoder thread enters an endless loop due to zero-byte reads, causing a denial-of-service condition.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor FreeRDP clients for abnormal behavior such as frozen connections or decoder thread hangs when connecting through RD Gateways. Check FreeRDP version using 'xfreerdp --version' or 'apt show freerdp2-x11' to identify affected versions (2.3.0 to 3.31.1). Inspect network traffic for incomplete chunked responses from RD Gateways.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause FreeRDP client applications to freeze or hang indefinitely. Users connecting through a compromised or malicious RD Gateway may experience application crashes or unresponsiveness, disrupting normal operations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, avoid using untrusted RD Gateways or disable chunked transfer encoding in FreeRDP configurations. Apply patches from FreeRDP's GitHub repository if available.
