Description

FreeRDP 3.0.0 before 3.32.0 contains a heap use-after-free vulnerability in smartcard emulation when SCARD_IOCTL_DISCONNECT and SCARD_IOCTL_TRANSMIT operate concurrently on one card handle. A malicious RDP server can overlap these IRPs through separate context workers to free and reuse the SCardHandle, causing client-process heap corruption and termination.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-109945 is a heap use-after-free vulnerability in FreeRDP versions 3.0.0 to 3.31.1 affecting smartcard emulation. A malicious RDP server can trigger this by overlapping SCARD_IOCTL_DISCONNECT and SCARD_IOCTL_TRANSMIT operations on the same card handle through separate workers. This causes the client to free and reuse the SCardHandle while a pointer still references it, leading to heap corruption and process termination.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking FreeRDP versions and smartcard emulation configurations. Use 'xfreerdp --version' to verify FreeRDP version. If using smartcard emulation, monitor for crashes or heap corruption during concurrent SCARD_IOCTL_DISCONNECT and SCARD_IOCTL_TRANSMIT operations.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can cause client crashes or termination due to heap corruption. It requires FreeRDP with smartcard emulation enabled and a malicious server with smartcard emulation configured. No reliable code execution or information disclosure has been demonstrated, but it disrupts client availability.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.0 or later. Disable smartcard emulation if not required. Ensure no malicious RDP servers are connected to clients using vulnerable versions.
