Description

Froxlor 0.10.0 before 2.3.14 contains a newline injection vulnerability that allows authenticated customers to inject arbitrary entries into the root-owned NSS group database via the unvalidated additional_members parameter of the Ftps.add API. Attackers can embed newline characters that the REBUILD_NSSUSERS cron writes unsanitized into /var/lib/extrausers/group, creating privileged group entries for local privilege escalation.

Executive Summary

Froxlor 0.10.0 before 2.3.14 has a newline injection flaw in the Ftps.add API. Authenticated customers can inject arbitrary entries into the root-owned NSS group database via the unvalidated additional_members parameter. Attackers embed newline characters that the REBUILD_NSSUSERS cron writes unsanitized into /var/lib/extrausers/group, creating privileged group entries for local privilege escalation.

Detection Guidance

Check for suspicious entries in /var/lib/extrausers/group by running: grep -E '^[^:]+:x:[0-9]+:' /var/lib/extrausers/group. Look for unexpected privileged group entries like root-level groups or unfamiliar users. Also inspect cron jobs with crontab -l and system cron files for REBUILD_NSSUSERS.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with low-privilege access could escalate privileges to root by injecting malicious group entries. This could allow unauthorized system access, data manipulation, or disruption of services relying on group permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized privilege escalation and system access, potentially violating data protection requirements under GDPR and HIPAA by allowing attackers to gain elevated access to sensitive data or system functions.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Froxlor to version 2.3.14 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, disable the Ftps.add API endpoint or apply input validation to reject newline characters in the additional_members parameter. Review and remove unauthorized entries from /var/lib/extrausers/group.
