Executive Summary

The Themify Popup plugin for WordPress has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 1.4.7. The issue is due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'popup_width_unit' parameter. Authenticated attackers with author-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages. These scripts execute when users access the affected pages.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Themify Popup plugin version 1.4.7 or lower. Check for unauthorized scripts in pages or posts, particularly those with injected popup_width_unit parameters. Review server logs for unusual activity from authenticated users with author-level access or higher.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site. These scripts can steal user data, hijack sessions, or perform actions on behalf of users. Since it requires author-level access, the risk is higher for sites with multiple contributors.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR and HIPAA compliance. GDPR requires protecting user data, and HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. Exploitation may result in data breaches, leading to legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update the Themify Popup plugin to the latest version immediately to patch the vulnerability.
  • Remove any suspicious scripts or code snippets from pages or posts that may have been injected.
  • Restrict author-level and higher user roles to only trusted personnel to reduce attack surface.
