Stored Cross-Site Scripting in Mang Board WordPress Plugin

Description

The Mang Board plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'content' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.4.3 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is exploitable because the wp_ajax_nopriv_mb_template endpoint is publicly accessible without authentication, nonce verification is not enforced for the content_reply mode, and admin-ajax.php responds with Content-Type: text/html, causing browsers to execute injected tags embedded in the JSON response body.

Executive Summary

The Mang Board plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'content' parameter. This allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts into pages. The vulnerability exists because the plugin's wp_ajax_nopriv_mb_template endpoint is publicly accessible without authentication, nonce verification is not enforced, and the response is served as text/html, causing browsers to execute injected scripts.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the Mang Board plugin versions up to 2.4.3. Look for unauthorized script injections in the 'content' parameter via WordPress admin-ajax.php requests. Inspect network traffic for POST requests to wp_ajax_nopriv_mb_template without proper nonce validation.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could exploit this to inject malicious scripts into pages viewed by users. This could lead to theft of cookies, session tokens, or other sensitive data. Users might be redirected to malicious sites or tricked into performing unintended actions. The impact includes potential compromise of user accounts and data integrity.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. It may result in data breaches, leading to legal penalties, loss of trust, and compliance violations. Organizations must address this to maintain regulatory compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Mang Board plugin to the latest version beyond 2.4.3. Disable the wp_ajax_nopriv_mb_template endpoint if not needed. Implement strict input sanitization for the 'content' parameter and ensure output escaping in JSON responses.
