Stored XSS in Quick PayPal Payments WordPress Plugin

Description

The Quick PayPal Payments: Payment Button & Form plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'form' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 6.0.4 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Because wp_kses_post strips only HTML tags, a quote-breaking payload containing no angle brackets survives post save intact, and the injected script fires for every viewer of the post β€” including higher-privileged Editors and Administrators who routinely preview a Contributor's pending content.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Quick PayPal Payments plugin for WordPress. It exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'form' parameter. Authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages. These scripts execute when users view the infected page, including higher-privileged users like editors and administrators.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the Quick PayPal Payments plugin version 6.0.4 or lower. Inspect form parameters in posts/pages for unusual scripts. Use Wordfence scanner or similar tools to detect stored XSS payloads in the 'form' parameter.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site. These scripts can steal user data, hijack sessions, or perform actions on behalf of users. Since the payload survives post save, it affects all viewers of the infected page, including administrators previewing content.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, compromising personal or sensitive data. For GDPR, it may result in unauthorized access to user data, violating principles of data protection. For HIPAA, it could expose protected health information, leading to compliance violations and legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Quick PayPal Payments plugin to the latest version. Remove or sanitize any injected scripts in existing posts/pages. Restrict contributor-level access to trusted users only.
