Executive Summary

SmartAdmin through version 3.30.0 has a missing authorization vulnerability in the AdminProtectController. This allows authenticated low-privileged employees to modify system-wide protection settings. Attackers can exploit unprotected endpoints like updateConfig and loginFail batchDelete to disable login lockout, two-factor authentication, weaken password rules, and clear lockout records.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized modifications to AdminProtectController settings. Review logs for calls to updateConfig and loginFail batchDelete endpoints. Verify if low-privileged users have access to system-wide protection settings.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers with low privileges to weaken security controls. They can disable login protections, bypass two-factor authentication, and reduce password strength requirements. This increases the risk of unauthorized access to sensitive systems and data.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized access to personal or health data. Disabling security controls like login lockout and two-factor authentication violates data protection requirements for access control and authentication.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply vendor patches if available. Restrict access to AdminProtectController endpoints. Audit and revoke unnecessary privileges for low-privileged users. Enable logging for these endpoints to monitor unauthorized changes.
