Description

The WebberZone Top 10 β€” Popular Posts plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'other_attributes (parsed to inject instance_id) + undeclared is_widget' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.5.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The exploit requires setting the undeclared is_widget flag to '1' via block JSON, which activates the vulnerable code path that concatenates the attacker-controlled instance_id value into an unescaped HTML class attribute.

Executive Summary

The WebberZone Top 10 β€” Popular Posts WordPress plugin has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in versions up to 4.5.2. Attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts by exploiting the 'other_attributes' parameter and setting an undeclared 'is_widget' flag to '1' via block JSON. This allows the attacker-controlled 'instance_id' value to be inserted into an unescaped HTML class attribute.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the WebberZone Top 10 β€” Popular Posts plugin version 4.5.2 or lower. Check for unauthorized scripts in pages or posts, particularly those with the undeclared is_widget flag set to '1' via block JSON. Review HTML class attributes for injected instance_id values.

Impact Analysis

Authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or above can inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. When users access these infected pages, the malicious scripts execute, potentially stealing user data, session cookies, or performing actions on behalf of the user. This could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or defacement of the website.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, exposing sensitive user data. For GDPR, this may result in unauthorized processing of personal data, triggering breach notification requirements and potential fines. For HIPAA, it could compromise protected health information, violating compliance and leading to penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the WebberZone Top 10 β€” Popular Posts plugin to the latest version. Remove or restrict contributor-level access to untrusted users. Scan WordPress installations for suspicious scripts or unauthorized changes in pages and posts.
