Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the WP User Manager WordPress plugin versions 2.9 to 2.9.19. It allows unauthenticated users to create functional WordPress accounts without completing payment during the Stripe registration process. The plugin fails to roll back the account creation when the payment step fails.

Detection Guidance

Check if your WP User Manager plugin version is between 2.9 and 2.9.19. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin files for version details in the main plugin file header.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated users could create free accounts that bypass payment requirements. This may lead to unauthorized access, resource misuse, or abuse of premium features without proper payment. The vulnerability could also enable spam registrations or fraudulent account creation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized account creation without proper payment verification. GDPR requires data protection and user consent, while HIPAA mandates strict access controls for sensitive health information. Uncontrolled account creation may lead to unauthorized access to user data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the WP User Manager plugin to version 2.9.20 or later immediately. Remove any unauthorized accounts created during the payment process and review user roles for suspicious activity.
