Description

The Premium Packages – Sell Digital Products Securely plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'note' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 7.2.8 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The exploit bypasses tag-based filtering because the payload is stored as a hex-escaped sequence (e.g., \x3cimg onerror=...\x3e) that sanitize_textarea_field does not strip, and is only decoded back into a live HTML tag by stripcslashes() during admin rendering β€” after all sanitization has occurred.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Premium Packages – Sell Digital Products Securely WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'note' parameter. The vulnerability exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping, enabling the injection of hex-escaped HTML tags that bypass standard filtering.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress plugins for 'Premium Packages – Sell Digital Products Securely' version 7.2.8 or lower. Inspect stored notes in the plugin for hex-escaped XSS payloads like \x3cimg onerror=...\x3e. Use Wordfence scanner or similar tools to detect malicious scripts in pages.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to inject malicious scripts into pages viewed by other users. When these users access the compromised page, the injected scripts execute, potentially stealing session cookies, redirecting to phishing sites, or performing actions on behalf of the user. This requires the attacker to have at least subscriber-level access to the WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if exploited on healthcare-related sites. Both standards require safeguards against unauthorized script execution and data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the plugin to the latest version if available. Remove or sanitize any injected scripts in stored notes. Restrict subscriber-level access to prevent unauthorized modifications. Monitor admin pages for unexpected script execution.
