Text::CSV_XS Perl Module UTF-8 Handling Information Disclosure

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-110756, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

Text::CSV_XS versions before 1.65 for Perl drop the end of a record and its line ending when a UTF-8 flagged field precedes invalid UTF-8 bytes in print. When a record contains a UTF-8 flagged field, print holds back trailing bytes that are not valid UTF-8 at each buffer flush, so that a character split across two flushes can be completed. Nothing writes the held-back bytes after the record's final flush. A record whose last field ends in such a byte loses it, any closing quote and the line ending, while print still returns true. combine is not affected. The next record is written onto the same line, or, when the last field was quoted, the missing closing quote makes a reader take every following record as part of that field.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Text::CSV_XS versions before 1.65 for Perl. When a record contains a UTF-8 flagged field followed by invalid UTF-8 bytes, the print function drops the end of the record, its line ending, and any closing quote. This causes the next record to be written incorrectly, either on the same line or as part of the previous field.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability affects Perl's Text::CSV_XS module versions before 1.65. To detect it, check the installed version of Text::CSV_XS using the command: perl -MText::CSV_XS -e 'print $Text::CSV_XS::VERSION' If the version is less than 1.65, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can corrupt data integrity by losing parts of records, especially those ending with invalid UTF-8 bytes. It may cause parsing errors in CSV files, leading to misinterpreted data or application failures. Systems relying on accurate CSV parsing could produce incorrect results.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data corruption or loss, particularly when handling UTF-8 encoded records. For GDPR, this may result in incomplete or inaccurate data processing, potentially violating integrity principles (Article 5). For HIPAA, data corruption could compromise the accuracy and reliability of protected health information, risking compliance with security and integrity requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Text::CSV_XS to version 1.65 or later using your package manager, e.g., cpan Text::CSV_XS or cpanm Text::CSV_XS. Review any Perl scripts using Text::CSV_XS for potential data corruption issues due to the vulnerability.
