Description

AdPlug through 2.4 contains a heap-based buffer overflow in CksmPlayer::update() in src/ksm.cpp that writes past the fixed databuf[2048] array without bounds checking. Attackers can supply a crafted .ksm module whose notes share one time slot to overflow the heap player object, causing memory corruption and denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a heap-based buffer overflow in the AdPlug library version 2.4 and earlier. It occurs in the CksmPlayer::update() function in src/ksm.cpp where data is written past a fixed-size databuf[2048] array without bounds checking. Attackers can exploit this by providing a crafted .ksm module with notes sharing the same time slot, causing memory corruption and denial of service.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect systems running AdPlug version 2.4 or earlier for KSM file processing. Check for crashes or memory corruption when loading .ksm files. Use static analysis tools to scan src/ksm.cpp for buffer overflows in CksmPlayer::update(). Monitor logs for heap corruption errors or segmentation faults during audio playback.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to denial of service attacks due to memory corruption. An attacker could exploit it by providing a specially crafted music file, causing the application to crash or behave unpredictably. It may also allow arbitrary code execution depending on the system configuration.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade AdPlug to the latest version that includes fixes for the KSM parser vulnerabilities. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to .ksm files from untrusted sources. Implement input validation to reject malformed KSM files. Monitor systems for unusual activity or crashes during audio playback.
