Stored DOM-Based XSS in SiteOrigin CSS WordPress Plugin

Description

The SiteOrigin CSS plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the 'href' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.6.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Successful exploitation requires the malicious comment to be approved and an administrator to subsequently open the Visual Inspector and click the attacker's anchor link, both of which are plausible interactions during routine comment triage.

Executive Summary

The SiteOrigin CSS plugin for WordPress has a stored DOM-based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 1.6.7. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'href' parameter. Attackers can inject malicious scripts that execute when users access infected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check for the SiteOrigin CSS plugin versions up to 1.6.7 in your WordPress installation. Inspect comments containing malicious href parameters in the DOM. Use browser developer tools to review injected scripts in pages.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject scripts that run when users visit compromised pages. Exploitation requires comment approval and an admin opening the Visual Inspector to click a malicious link. This could lead to unauthorized actions, data theft, or defacement of affected websites.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling stored cross-site scripting attacks. If exploited, it may allow unauthorized script execution in user browsers, potentially leading to data theft or manipulation. This could violate data protection requirements under GDPR (e.g., Article 32 security of processing) and HIPAA (e.g., safeguards for protected health information).

Mitigation Strategies

Update the SiteOrigin CSS plugin to the latest version beyond 1.6.7. Remove any suspicious comments with injected scripts. Implement strict input validation for href parameters in WordPress.
