Description

LibreDesk before 2.9.0-rc.8 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows authenticated agents to execute script by uploading SVGs with malformed Content-Type parameters. Attackers can upload an SVG typed 'image/svg+xml; x' via /api/v1/media so GET /uploads/{uuid} serves it inline without sandbox, running script in any viewing agent's or administrator's session.

Executive Summary

LibreDesk before version 2.9.0-rc.8 has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. Authenticated agents can upload SVG files with malformed Content-Type parameters, such as 'image/svg+xml; x'. When these files are served via the /api/v1/media endpoint and accessed through GET /uploads/{uuid}, the browser renders them inline without proper sandboxing. This allows malicious scripts to execute in the sessions of viewing agents or administrators.

Detection Guidance

Check for uploaded SVG files with malformed Content-Type parameters like 'image/svg+xml; x' in /api/v1/media or /uploads/{uuid} endpoints. Inspect Content-Type headers and Content-Disposition settings for inline rendering of XML-based files.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with agent access could upload a malicious SVG file that executes scripts when viewed by other users or administrators. This could lead to session hijacking, unauthorized actions on behalf of users, or theft of sensitive data like session cookies or personal information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate GDPR by exposing personal data through script execution in user sessions. For HIPAA, it may risk unauthorized access to protected health information if agents handle such data. Compliance requires addressing XSS risks to protect user data and maintain confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to LibreDesk version 2.9.0-rc.8 or later. Ensure SVG files are forced to download by setting Content-Disposition to 'attachment' and applying sandbox headers. Validate and normalize all uploaded file Content-Type headers.
