Description

The WP Booking System – Booking Calendar plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via the 'data[orderby]' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.1.0.1 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with administrator-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. Exploitation requires the targeted calendar to have more than 200 bookings, as the orderby value is only forwarded to the database layer when the AJAX handler takes the use_ajax branch; an Administrator can satisfy this condition by creating bookings directly.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a SQL Injection flaw in the WP Booking System – Booking Calendar plugin for WordPress. It exists in versions up to 2.1.0.1 due to improper escaping of the 'data[orderby]' parameter and lack of SQL query preparation. Authenticated attackers with admin-level access can inject malicious SQL queries to extract sensitive database information. The attack requires the targeted calendar to have over 200 bookings.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to extract sensitive data from your WordPress database, including user information, booking details, and other confidential data. Since it requires admin access, the primary risk is data theft rather than unauthorized system access. The impact is limited to calendars with over 200 bookings.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing personal and sensitive data. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for health-related information. A breach via this flaw may result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage for organizations handling regulated data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the WP Booking System – Booking Calendar plugin to the latest version beyond 2.1.0.1. If an update is not available, consider disabling the plugin until a patch is released. Ensure all administrator accounts have strong passwords and enable multi-factor authentication to prevent unauthorized access.
