Description

unarr through 1.1.1 contains an off-by-one heap-based buffer overflow in tar_get_name() in tar/parse-tar.c, reachable through the ar_entry_get_name() API. Attackers can supply a crafted TAR archive with a full ustar prefix and name to write a NUL byte past the allocation, corrupting heap memory and crashing the process.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an off-by-one heap-based buffer overflow in the unarr library through version 1.1.1. It occurs in the tar_get_name() function in tar/parse-tar.c, which is accessible via the ar_entry_get_name() API. Attackers can exploit this by providing a specially crafted TAR archive with a full ustar prefix and name, allowing them to write a NUL byte past the allocated memory. This corrupts heap memory and can crash the affected process.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the unarr library and can be detected by checking for vulnerable versions of the library in use. Inspect installed packages or binaries linked to unarr. No direct network detection commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to crash the process handling the TAR archive, potentially leading to denial-of-service conditions. If exploited successfully, it might enable arbitrary code execution depending on the application's memory layout and protections. Users processing untrusted TAR files with unarr are at risk.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the unarr library to the latest version that patches the off-by-one buffer overflow. If updating is not possible, avoid processing untrusted TAR archives or restrict access to the ar_entry_get_name() API. Monitor for crashes in applications using unarr.
