Description

nifti_clib through 3.0.1 contains a stack-based out-of-bounds read and write vulnerability in nifti_convert_n2hdr2nim() because the NIfTI-2 dim[0] value is never range-checked. Attackers can supply a crafted 540-byte NIfTI-2 header read via nifti_image_read() to crash applications or corrupt stack memory.

Executive Summary

nifti_clib through 3.0.1 has a stack-based out-of-bounds read and write flaw in the nifti_convert_n2hdr2nim() function. The issue occurs because the NIfTI-2 dim[0] value is not checked for valid range. Attackers can exploit this by providing a maliciously crafted 540-byte NIfTI-2 header file, which when processed via nifti_image_read(), can crash applications or corrupt stack memory.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to applications using nifti_clib library versions up to 3.0.1. Detection requires checking if your system runs software that uses this library and verifying the library version. Check installed versions with commands like 'ldconfig -p | grep nifti' or 'apt list --installed | grep nifti' on Debian-based systems.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers to crash applications using nifti_clib or corrupt memory on the system. If exploited, it may lead to denial-of-service conditions or potentially enable arbitrary code execution, depending on the application's context and memory layout.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update nifti_clib to version 3.0.1 or later if available. If no patch exists, consider disabling or removing applications using this library until patched. Monitor vendor advisories for updates.
