Description

ThinkCMF through 8.0.1 contains an incorrect authorization vulnerability in RestAdminBaseController that allows restricted backend administrators to call every admin REST API endpoint because Auth::check() fails open when no admin_api rule exists. Attackers with a valid admin-type API token can list member emails and mobile numbers, disable members, and call PUT admin/roles/{id}/authorize to grant themselves full administrator rights.

Executive Summary

ThinkCMF through 8.0.1 has an authorization flaw in RestAdminBaseController where restricted backend admins can bypass intended restrictions. The Auth::check() function fails to enforce rules properly when no admin_api rule exists, allowing attackers with a valid admin-type API token to access unauthorized endpoints.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized admin API calls by reviewing logs for REST endpoints like admin/roles/{id}/authorize. Look for requests with valid admin-type API tokens accessing restricted endpoints. Verify if Auth::check() fails open when no admin_api rule exists in ThinkCMF 8.0.1 or earlier.

Impact Analysis

Attackers with a valid admin token could list sensitive member data like emails and mobile numbers, disable members, or escalate their own privileges to gain full administrator rights, compromising the entire system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information, potentially resulting in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade ThinkCMF to a patched version beyond 8.0.1. Review and restrict admin API token permissions. Audit logs for unauthorized role modifications or member data access. Implement strict access controls for admin endpoints.
