CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

Frappe HRMS versions 14.x before 14.38.2, 15.x before 15.64.0, and 16.x before 16.18.0 have a SQL injection vulnerability due to missing input validation in some endpoints. This allows any authenticated attacker, even with low privileges, to send specially crafted requests and extract sensitive database information.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability in Frappe HRMS, monitor network traffic for suspicious requests targeting HRMS endpoints. Check for unusual database queries or errors in application logs. Use tools like SQLMap to test endpoints for injection flaws, but only in a controlled environment with permission.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to steal sensitive data from the database, such as employee records, personal information, or financial details. Since it requires authentication but works even with low-privilege accounts, the risk is significant for organizations using vulnerable versions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Frappe HRMS to version 14.38.2 or later for 14.x, 15.64.0 or later for 15.x, or 16.18.0 or later for 16.x to address the SQL injection vulnerability.
