Command Injection in libblockdev via udisks2

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-111581, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

A flaw was found in libblockdev. The bd_fs_ntfs_set_label() and bd_fs_vfat_set_label() functions pass caller-supplied label values as bare positional arguments to the ntfslabel and fatlabel utilities without end-of-options separators or input validation for values beginning with a dash. This allows a label starting with '-' to be interpreted as a command-line flag by the spawned tool, potentially bypassing safety checks or causing unintended operations. This is reachable by unprivileged local users through the udisks2 Filesystem.SetLabel() D-Bus method without administrator authentication.

CWE ID Description
CWE-88 The product constructs a string for a command to be executed by a separate component in another control sphere, but it does not properly delimit the intended arguments, options, or switches within that command string.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in libblockdev's NTFS and VFAT filesystem plugins. The functions bd_fs_ntfs_set_label() and bd_fs_vfat_set_label() pass user-supplied labels directly to external binaries (ntfslabel and fatlabel) without proper sanitization. Labels starting with a dash ('-') are interpreted as command-line flags by these utilities, allowing argument injection. This flaw is exploitable by unprivileged local users via udisks2's Filesystem.SetLabel() D-Bus method without administrator authentication.

Detection Guidance

Check if libblockdev is installed and inspect filesystem label operations. Look for suspicious ntfslabel or fatlabel command invocations in process logs. Commands like 'ps aux | grep ntfslabel' or 'journalctl -u udisks2' may reveal unusual activity. Also review polkit policies for udisks2 modifications.

Impact Analysis

The impact is limited. Attackers could manipulate filesystem metadata or trigger unintended operations like printing version information, but no privilege escalation, data corruption, or cross-user attacks were demonstrated. The D-Bus API ultimately fails to execute the intended label change, minimizing real-world impact.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly impact compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or similar standards. It is a local privilege escalation risk limited to filesystem label manipulation on user-owned devices without cross-user attack paths or data corruption. No evidence suggests it could lead to unauthorized data access or disclosure required for regulatory violations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update libblockdev to the latest patched version. Restrict polkit policies to limit udisks2 Filesystem.SetLabel() access. Monitor filesystem operations and disable label changes for untrusted users until patched.
