Executive Summary

CoAI through 4.0.0 has an unauthenticated path traversal vulnerability in its generation and article archive download endpoints. Attackers can manipulate the hash query parameter by including ../ sequences to access and download any readable .tar.gz or .zip file, including archives generated by other users. The vulnerability arises because the hash parameter is directly concatenated into filesystem paths without proper validation.

Detection Guidance

Check if the affected endpoints (/generation/download/tar, /generation/download/zip, /article/download/tar, /article/download/zip) are accessible without authentication. Test with curl commands like: curl 'http://target/generation/download/tar?hash=../../../../etc/passwd.tar.gz' or curl 'http://target/article/download/zip?hash=../../../../etc/passwd.zip' to see if arbitrary files are returned.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to download sensitive files from the server, including other users' generated archives. Attackers can access any .tar.gz or .zip file in the application's directories, potentially exposing confidential data such as user-generated content or system files. The impact is limited to files with these specific extensions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing sensitive user data. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. Unauthorized access to user-generated archives may result in data breaches, triggering legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade CoAI to a patched version if available. If not, restrict access to the vulnerable endpoints by adding authentication middleware. Validate and sanitize the 'hash' parameter to prevent path traversal by ensuring it only contains allowed characters and resolves within the intended directory.
