Description

FilePress through 3.0.1 contains an sql injection vulnerability that allows authenticated low-privilege users to inject SQL into ORDER BY clauses via the unvalidated asc parameter. Attackers can use blind boolean or time-based subqueries in dzz/pichome/library/filelist.php and dzz/collection/filelist.php to extract database rows including administrator credential hashes.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is an SQL injection vulnerability in FilePress through version 3.0.1. Authenticated low-privilege users can inject malicious SQL code into the 'asc' parameter of ORDER BY clauses in filelist.php files. Attackers can use blind boolean or time-based subqueries to extract sensitive data like administrator credential hashes from the database.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect FilePress installations for versions up to 3.0.1. Check filelist.php in dzz/pichome/library/ and dzz/collection/ for SQL injection in the asc parameter. Monitor database queries for blind boolean or time-based subqueries in ORDER BY clauses. Use tools like SQLmap to test for SQL injection via the asc parameter in filelist.php endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with low privileges could extract sensitive data including admin passwords, manipulate database contents, or gain unauthorized access to files. This could lead to data breaches, system compromise, or further network infiltration depending on the database contents.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations using affected FilePress versions may face compliance violations, regulatory fines, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade FilePress to a version beyond 3.0.1 if available. If not, restrict access to filelist.php endpoints to authenticated users only. Implement strict input validation for the asc parameter, allowing only asc or desc values. Apply database-level protections like query whitelisting for ORDER BY clauses.
