Description

HestiaCP before 1.10.5 contains an authorization bypass vulnerability that allows non-ROOT_USER administrators to perform write actions while impersonating the protected ROOT_USER account. Attackers can log in via the loginas parameter and POST to /add/cron/, because the read-only flag is never checked, causing crond to run their commands as the protected administrator's system account.

Executive Summary

HestiaCP before version 1.10.5 has an authorization bypass flaw where non-root administrators can impersonate the protected root user account. By exploiting the loginas parameter and POSTing to /add/cron/, attackers can create cron jobs that run as the root user. The system fails to check the read-only flag, allowing unauthorized write actions despite intended access controls.

Detection Guidance

Check HestiaCP version with 'v-list-sys-services' or 'v-list-sys-hestia-all'. If version is below 1.10.5, the system is vulnerable. Inspect cron job creation logs for unauthorized POST requests to /add/cron/ via the loginas parameter.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain unauthorized administrative privileges, execute commands as root, install backdoors, read or write files, or exfiltrate data if network access is available. This could lead to full system compromise, data breaches, or persistent control over the server.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or loss of sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to compromised data integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade HestiaCP to version 1.10.5 or later immediately. Review cron jobs for unauthorized entries created by non-root admins. Disable the loginas feature if not required. Monitor for suspicious POST requests to /add/cron/.
