Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a missing authorization issue in the Distributor WordPress plugin before version 2.3.2. It allows Contributor-level users to perform AJAX actions meant for higher-privileged users, such as sending stored connection credentials to attacker-controlled servers or creating unauthorized external connections.

Detection Guidance

Check if your Distributor plugin version is below 2.3.2. Look for unauthorized AJAX requests to dt_verify_external_connection or dt_begin_authorization in server logs. Inspect network traffic for credential leaks to external servers.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could exploit this to steal stored connection credentials by tricking users into modifying connection URLs. They could also create unauthorized external connections, potentially leading to data breaches or unauthorized access to sensitive systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data exposure, violating compliance requirements for data protection such as GDPR or HIPAA. It may result in unauthorized access to sensitive data, triggering regulatory penalties and legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade the Distributor plugin to version 2.3.2 or later. Review user roles and permissions to ensure Contributors cannot access external connection management. Monitor for suspicious AJAX activity or unauthorized credential transmissions.
