Description

ZKEACMS through 4.4 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to forge REST API JWT bearer tokens using a hard-coded HMAC-SHA256 signing key in JwtBearerDefaults.cs. Attackers can sign a token with the Name claim set to 'admin' to call ApiAuthorize endpoints, modifying articles and products and reading form submissions.

Executive Summary

ZKEACMS through version 4.4 has an authentication bypass flaw. Unauthenticated attackers can forge REST API JWT bearer tokens using a hard-coded HMAC-SHA256 signing key. By signing a token with the Name claim set to 'admin', attackers can gain elevated privileges to call ApiAuthorize endpoints.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for unauthenticated access to REST API endpoints and verifying JWT token signing keys. Inspect JwtBearerDefaults.cs for hard-coded HMAC-SHA256 keys and test if tokens with Name=admin can bypass authentication.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could modify articles and products, read form submissions, and perform unauthorized actions as an admin. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized changes to content, and potential loss of sensitive information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data exposure, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ZKEACMS to the latest version beyond 4.4. Remove any hard-coded HMAC-SHA256 keys in JwtBearerDefaults.cs and regenerate all JWT signing keys. Restrict API access to authenticated users only and monitor for unauthorized admin-level actions.
