Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

Helical Insight through 7.0.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability that allows authenticated viewers to read files outside the solution directory via the path parameter of /getExternalResource. Attackers can supply parent-directory segments to read any readable file with an allowed extension such as js, json, or html, bypassing per-resource access control.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

This is a path traversal vulnerability in Helical Insight version 7.0.0 and earlier. It allows authenticated users with viewer privileges to read files outside the application directory by manipulating the path parameter in the /getExternalResource endpoint. Attackers can use parent directory references like ../ to access sensitive files with allowed extensions such as js, json, or html.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if Helical Insight version 7.0.0 or earlier is installed. Monitor HTTP requests to the /getExternalResource endpoint for path traversal attempts using parent directory references like ../. Test by sending crafted requests with path parameters containing ../ to see if unauthorized files are accessible.

  • Check installed version: grep -r "Helical Insight" /path/to/installation or check version via admin panel.
  • Inspect logs for suspicious requests to /getExternalResource with path parameters containing ../ or similar traversal sequences.
  • Use tools like curl to test: curl -u username:password 'http://target/getExternalResource?path=../../../../etc/passwd' and verify if sensitive files are returned.
Impact Analysis

An attacker could read sensitive files on the server, including configuration files, source code, or other confidential data. This may lead to further attacks like data theft, unauthorized access, or even remote code execution depending on the files accessed.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations using this software may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Helical Insight to a patched version beyond 7.0.0. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the /getExternalResource endpoint via firewall rules or disable it if unused. Implement strict input validation to block path traversal sequences like ../ in user-supplied parameters.

  • Apply vendor patches or updates to address the path traversal flaw in EFWController.java and related endpoints.
  • Restrict network access to the /getExternalResource endpoint to trusted IPs only.
  • Review and sanitize all user inputs in the application to prevent directory traversal and injection attacks.
