Executive Summary

MrDoc through version 1.1.1 has a missing object-level authorization vulnerability in the ImportLocalDoc API. Authenticated users can send PUT requests with arbitrary document IDs to publish private drafts or reparent documents, or POST requests with arbitrary top document IDs to inject documents. The vulnerability stems from a lack of proper authorization checks in these API endpoints.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect MrDoc API endpoints for PUT/POST requests to /import-local-doc or similar paths. Check if authenticated users can modify documents/projects without ownership checks. Review logs for unauthorized document publishing or reparenting actions.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to modify or publish documents they do not own, exposing private draft content and corrupting document structures. It can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive information, data integrity issues, and potential project disruption by injecting malicious documents.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing private or sensitive documents to unauthorized users. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding health information. Unauthorized access risks data breaches and non-compliance penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update MrDoc to a patched version. If unavailable, implement object-level authorization checks in PUT/POST handlers for /import-local-doc. Ensure the existing check_user_doc_edit helper is enforced. Restrict document/project modifications to authorized users only.
