Executive Summary

SurveyKing before version 1.13.0 has a missing authorization vulnerability. Unauthenticated attackers can download any stored file by its ID using the endpoint GET /api/public/preview/{attachmentId}. By knowing or guessing time-ordered snowflake file IDs, attackers bypass file access controls in FileServiceImpl.loadFile, allowing them to read private survey attachments and respondent uploads.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized access to files via GET requests to /api/public/preview/{attachmentId}. Monitor logs for unusual file download patterns or requests with valid but non-sequential snowflake IDs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthorized individuals to access sensitive files, including private survey attachments and respondent uploads. If you use SurveyKing before 1.13.0, attackers could steal confidential data, intellectual property, or personal information without detection.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized access to personal and sensitive data. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A breach could lead to legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade SurveyKing to version 1.13.0 or later. Implement strict access controls to prevent unauthenticated file downloads. Review and restrict permissions for file access endpoints.
