Executive Summary

AIHelms through 0.1.25 has a missing authorization vulnerability in its efficiency analytics module. Authenticated low-privileged users can bypass permission checks for efficiency:read and efficiency:write actions. The flaw exists because read endpoints only verify authentication via get_current_user without enforcing role-based permissions, while write endpoints correctly use require_permission. Attackers can access sensitive organization-wide AI spend data and modify report suggestions.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized access to endpoints like /cost/detail, /top-users, /budget, or /cost/detail/scope-users in AIHelms API. Monitor logs for requests to these routes by low-privilege users. Verify if get_current_user is used without require_permission checks in efficiency.py.

Impact Analysis

Unauthorized users can view sensitive financial data like organization-wide AI spending, top-spender rankings, cost breakdowns, budgets, and analysis reports. They can also modify suggestion statuses or generate reports without proper permissions. This exposes confidential operational and financial information across departments and projects.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR's data protection principles by exposing personal and financial data without proper authorization. It may also breach HIPAA if healthcare-related AI spending data is involved. Organizations could face regulatory fines, legal liabilities, and reputational damage for failing to protect sensitive data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update AIHelms to a patched version. Replace Depends(get_current_user) with Depends(require_permission('efficiency:read')) on all read routes and Depends(require_permission('efficiency:write')) on suggestion-status write routes in efficiency.py. Restrict access to sensitive endpoints until fixes are applied.
