Description

Course-tencent-cloud through 2.0.1 contains an improper restriction of authentication attempts vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to brute force 6-digit SMS/email verification codes, which are never invalidated or attempt-limited. Attackers who know a victim's phone or email can trigger a code and rotate source IPs against the password reset and verify login endpoints to take over accounts.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an improper restriction of authentication attempts in Course-tencent-cloud through version 2.0.1. It allows unauthenticated attackers to brute force 6-digit SMS or email verification codes without any invalidation or attempt limiting. Attackers can exploit this by knowing a victim's phone or email, triggering codes, and rotating source IPs to bypass security and take over accounts.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for repeated attempts to trigger SMS/email verification codes without rate limiting. Check server logs for excessive requests to password reset or login verification endpoints. Look for patterns of rapid code generation attempts from multiple IPs targeting the same accounts.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to unauthorized account access, allowing attackers to take over user accounts by brute-forcing verification codes. Victims may experience identity theft, data breaches, or loss of control over sensitive accounts like email or cloud services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of compliance certifications.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement rate limiting on verification code endpoints to block repeated requests. Enforce a maximum of 3-5 attempts per account before temporary lockout. Require longer or alphanumeric verification codes to increase brute force difficulty. Disable SMS/email verification if not strictly necessary.
