Executive Summary

EFAK through version 5.1.0 has a missing authorization vulnerability. Authenticated low-privilege users can exploit the /api/users endpoints to manage accounts without proper administrator role checks. Attackers can send POST, PUT, or DELETE requests to UserController to grant themselves ROLE_ADMIN, create new administrators, or delete existing users, thereby gaining full control over managed Kafka clusters.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows low-privilege users to escalate privileges to administrator level, create unauthorized admin accounts, or delete existing users. This could lead to complete compromise of the EFAK system, unauthorized access to managed Kafka clusters, data breaches, or disruption of services.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or deletion of sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security and privacy requirements. Organizations using EFAK may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to potential data breaches or loss of audit trails.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update EFAK to the latest version beyond 5.1.0 to patch the missing authorization flaw. Restrict access to /api/users endpoints by enforcing strict role-based access controls and ensure only administrators can manage user accounts. Review all user accounts for unauthorized privilege escalations or new admin accounts created by attackers.
