Description

The Themify Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via 'visible' Shortcode Attribute in all versions up to, and including, 7.8.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This vulnerability is only exploitable when the 'slider' custom post type is active, which is satisfied automatically when the plugin is paired with a Themify theme or any other plugin that registers the 'slider' CPT.

Executive Summary

The Themify Builder plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'visible' shortcode attribute. This allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into pages. The vulnerability requires the 'slider' custom post type to be active, which happens automatically when using a Themify theme or compatible plugin.

Detection Guidance

Check for the Themify Builder plugin versions up to 7.8.2. Inspect WordPress pages using the 'slider' shortcode for malicious scripts. Use WordPress admin dashboard to review plugin versions and active custom post types.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site, potentially stealing user data, session cookies, or redirecting visitors to harmful sites. This could lead to compromised user accounts, data breaches, or reputational damage. The impact depends on the attacker's goals and the site's user base.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations may face fines, legal action, or loss of compliance certifications if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Themify Builder plugin to the latest version beyond 7.8.2. Remove or restrict contributor-level access to untrusted users. Disable the 'slider' custom post type if not needed.
