Executive Summary

This is an unauthenticated Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerability in phpMyFAQ versions 4.2.0-alpha through 4.2.0-beta. Attackers can send multiple concurrent GET requests to unauthenticated faqs and search API endpoints. The server loads all database records into PHP memory, causing excessive CPU and memory consumption that crashes the server.

Detection Guidance

Monitor for unusual CPU and memory usage spikes on the phpMyFAQ server. Check web server logs for excessive GET requests to /api/v4.0/faqs or /api/v4.0/search endpoints. Use tools like netstat or ss to detect high connection rates to these paths.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause server crashes, downtime, and complete unavailability of the phpMyFAQ application for all users. It may also lead to performance degradation or resource exhaustion on the hosting server.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can lead to server crashes and prolonged downtime due to uncontrolled resource consumption, which may disrupt access to critical data. For GDPR, this could impact availability of personal data processing systems, potentially violating Article 32 requirements for security and resilience. For HIPAA, system unavailability could hinder access to protected health information, affecting the integrity and availability requirements under the Security Rule.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade phpMyFAQ to version 4.2.0-alpha.2 or later. Temporarily block or rate-limit access to the vulnerable API endpoints via web server or firewall rules. Implement database-level pagination in the API endpoints to prevent full dataset loading.
