Executive Summary

This is an authorization bypass vulnerability in phpMyFAQ versions before 4.1.9 and 4.2.0-alpha before 4.2.0-beta. It allows low-privileged users with the 'dlattachment' right or anonymous users (when guest downloads are enabled) to download attachments from restricted FAQs by bypassing permission checks in attachment.php.

Detection Guidance

Check phpMyFAQ logs for unauthorized attachment downloads. Inspect network traffic for requests to attachment.php with suspicious parameters like direct attachment ID access. Review user permissions for the 'dlattachment' right and guest download settings.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could access confidential files from restricted FAQs without proper authorization. This could lead to unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information stored in attachments, potentially affecting confidentiality of data managed by phpMyFAQ.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy). Unauthorized disclosure of restricted information could result in regulatory penalties and loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade phpMyFAQ to version 4.1.9 or later. Disable guest downloads by setting allowDownloadsForGuests to false. Remove the 'dlattachment' right from low-privileged users until patched. Monitor for unauthorized access attempts in logs.
