CWE ID Description
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is an unauthenticated SQL injection flaw in the Hospital Management System. The issue affects admin-panel.php and doctor-panel.php where the GET parameter 'ID' is directly concatenated into SQL UPDATE statements without sanitization. Attackers can manipulate SQL queries to cancel appointments or extract data without authentication.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability, inspect the admin-panel.php and doctor-panel.php files for improper handling of the GET parameter 'ID'. Look for direct concatenation into SQL UPDATE statements without sanitization or prepared statements. Check for unauthenticated access to these endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to cancel appointments, delete or modify data, or extract sensitive information from the database. Since no authentication is required, the attack can be performed remotely and potentially at scale.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or modification of patient data, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare privacy) requirements. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the affected files to use prepared statements with bound parameters for the 'ID' parameter. Implement session and role-based access controls to restrict who can access the appointment cancellation functionality. Ensure all user inputs are properly sanitized before being used in SQL queries.
