Heap Overflow in libmng via Malformed ORDR Chunk

Description

libmng through 2.0.3 contains a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in mng_read_ordr() that allows attackers to corrupt heap memory because ORDR entry buffers are sized by 5-byte on-wire records instead of 8-byte in-memory entries. Attackers can supply a crafted MNG file with MHDR, DHDR and a multi-record ORDR chunk to applications calling mng_read or mng_readdisplay, writing attacker-controlled data past the allocation and crashing the application.

Executive Summary

This is a heap-based buffer overflow in libmng through version 2.0.3. The mng_read_ordr() function incorrectly sizes ORDR entry buffers using 5-byte on-wire records instead of 8-byte in-memory entries. Attackers can exploit this by providing a crafted MNG file with MHDR, DHDR, and a multi-record ORDR chunk to applications using mng_read or mng_readdisplay, causing heap memory corruption and crashes.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect systems using libmng for applications processing MNG files. Check for crashes or memory corruption when opening files with MHDR, DHDR, and ORDR chunks. Use tools like valgrind or AddressSanitizer to monitor heap overflows during file parsing.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to crash applications that process MNG files, potentially leading to denial of service. Since the overflow is attacker-controlled, it could also enable arbitrary code execution in some cases, depending on the application and system configuration.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling heap memory corruption through crafted MNG files. While not directly a data breach, the crash or corruption may lead to denial of service or unintended behavior in applications handling sensitive data. GDPR requires secure processing of personal data, and HIPAA mandates integrity of health information systems; this flaw could undermine those requirements if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update libmng to a patched version if available. If no patch exists, disable applications using libmng from processing MNG files, especially those with ORDR chunks. Monitor for crashes or unusual memory usage in affected applications.
