Description

libtta through 2.3 contains a stack out-of-bounds read and write vulnerability in tta_decoder_process_stream() and tta_decoder_process_frame() because header checks never reject a zero channel count. Attackers can supply a crafted .tta file declaring zero channels so decorrelation accesses cache[-1] with stream-derived values, corrupting stack memory in decoding applications.

Executive Summary

libtta through version 2.3 has a stack out-of-bounds read and write vulnerability due to missing validation of the channel count in .tta file headers. Attackers can craft files declaring zero audio channels, causing the decoder to access invalid memory (cache[-1]) during processing. This corrupts stack memory in applications using libtta for decoding.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for vulnerable versions of libtta. Use commands like 'apt list --installed | grep libtta' on Debian-based systems or 'rpm -qa | grep libtta' on RPM-based systems to verify installed versions. If libtta 2.3 or earlier is found, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code or crash applications processing malicious .tta files. Since it corrupts stack memory, it may lead to denial-of-service conditions or potential remote code execution on systems using vulnerable libtta versions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly impact compliance with GDPR or HIPAA. It is a stack out-of-bounds read/write issue in libtta affecting audio decoding applications. Compliance risks would depend on how the vulnerable library is used in systems handling personal or health data, but the vulnerability itself is unrelated to data protection standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update libtta to a version beyond 2.3. If no patch is available, disable or remove libtta from systems processing .tta files. Monitor for suspicious .tta files with zero channel counts as potential attack vectors.
