Last updated on: 2026-10-18

Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

Vita3K before build 4187 contains a path traversal (zip slip) vulnerability in install_archive_content() that allows attackers to write files outside the install directory via crafted .vpk archives. Attackers can embed '..' segments or absolute paths in zip entry names to write attacker-controlled files anywhere writable by Vita3K, potentially enabling host code execution.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

Vita3K before build 4187 has a path traversal vulnerability in the install_archive_content() function. Attackers can craft .vpk archive files with malicious zip entries containing '..' segments or absolute paths. This allows writing files outside the intended installation directory, potentially enabling host code execution if attacker-controlled executable files are written.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect Vita3K installations for versions before build 4187. Check for unexpected files outside the intended install directory, especially those created by .vpk archives. Review logs for path traversal attempts like '..' or absolute paths in archive entries.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to write arbitrary files to any writable location on your system where Vita3K has permissions. This may lead to host code execution, data theft, or system compromise if the attacker gains control over executable files or sensitive system files.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially violate compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized file writes outside intended directories. Attackers could place malicious files in sensitive system locations, risking data exfiltration or unauthorized access to protected health or personal data. The path traversal flaw enables arbitrary file writes, which may lead to breaches of confidentiality or integrity requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Vita3K to build 4187 or later to patch the vulnerability. Avoid installing untrusted .vpk files. If updating is not possible, restrict write permissions to Vita3K directories and monitor for unauthorized file writes.
