Description

Gitify before 7.10.0 contains a login cross-site request forgery vulnerability that allows remote attackers to bind a victim's client to their account because performGitHubWebOAuth() omits OAuth state validation. Attackers can get a gitify://oauth?code= link with their own authorization code opened during a victim's pending login, causing Gitify to display attacker-controlled notifications as the victim's own.

Executive Summary

Gitify before version 7.10.0 has a login Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability due to missing OAuth state validation in the performGitHubWebOAuth() function. Attackers can trick victims into opening a malicious link containing their own authorization code, causing the victim's Gitify client to bind to the attacker's GitHub account and display attacker-controlled notifications as the victim.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to Gitify versions before 7.10.0 and involves missing OAuth state validation. To detect it, check the installed Gitify version using commands like 'gitify --version' or inspect the application's update logs. If the version is below 7.10.0, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain unauthorized access to your Gitify client, causing it to display their notifications under your account. This could lead to data exposure, unauthorized actions, or confusion about account activity. The impact is limited as it requires victim interaction with a malicious link.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA as it involves a login CSRF flaw in Gitify's OAuth flow rather than data exposure or unauthorized access to sensitive information. However, if exploited, it could lead to unauthorized account binding, potentially causing confusion or misuse of user data, which may indirectly impact compliance if user data is misrepresented or accessed improperly.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Gitify to version 7.10.0 or later to address the missing OAuth state validation vulnerability.

  • Review network logs for suspicious gitify://oauth?code= links or unauthorized OAuth callbacks.
  • Monitor Gitify client behavior for unexpected account bindings or notifications from unknown sources.
