Description

VideoLAN libdvdnav through 7.0.0 contains an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in set_PTT that allows attackers to crash applications by supplying an invalid JumpTT title number checked only by an assert. Attackers can craft a DVD or disc image whose First Play program chain issues JumpTT with title 0 or an oversized number, reading past the heap title table and crashing the player.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds read flaw in VideoLAN libdvdnav through version 7.0.0. It occurs in the set_PTT function when processing JumpTT operations. The issue allows attackers to crash applications by supplying an invalid title number, such as 0 or an excessively large value. The title number is only checked using an assert statement, which fails to prevent invalid inputs during runtime.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the version of libdvdnav installed on your system. If it is version 7.0.0 or earlier, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'dpkg -l libdvdnav' for Debian-based systems or 'rpm -qa libdvdnav' for RPM-based systems to verify the version.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause media players using libdvdnav to crash when processing malicious DVDs or disc images. Attackers could exploit this to disrupt media playback or potentially execute arbitrary code, depending on the application's memory handling.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA as it primarily causes application crashes and potential information leaks through out-of-bounds memory reads. However, if exploited, it could lead to unauthorized data exposure, which may violate GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's confidentiality requirements depending on the context of use.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update libdvdnav to a version newer than 7.0.0. If no patch is available, avoid using untrusted DVDs or disc images until the update is applied. Monitor application crashes when handling DVD content as a potential sign of exploitation.
