Description

librtmp (RTMPDump) through 2.6 contains a heap out-of-bounds read vulnerability in AMFProp_Decode that reads an AMF0 strict-array element count before checking that four bytes remain. A malicious RTMP server or man in the middle can send an AMF0 body ending with a strict-array type byte and fewer than four trailing bytes to crash the client.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a heap out-of-bounds read in librtmp (RTMPDump) through version 2.6. It occurs in the AMFProp_Decode function when it reads an AMF0 strict-array element count without checking if four bytes remain in the input buffer. An attacker can exploit this by sending a malicious RTMP message ending with a strict-array type byte and fewer than four trailing bytes, causing the client to crash.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor for crashes in applications using librtmp (RTMPDump) versions 2.6 or earlier when processing AMF0 data. Check for heap corruption errors or segmentation faults during RTMP communication. Use network traffic analysis tools like Wireshark to inspect RTMP packets for malformed AMF0 strict-array elements with insufficient trailing bytes.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause denial-of-service by crashing the affected application. If you use RTMPDump or any software relying on librtmp, an attacker could exploit this to make the application crash by sending specially crafted RTMP messages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability does not directly affect compliance with GDPR or HIPAA. It is a memory safety issue in librtmp that could cause crashes but does not involve unauthorized data access, processing, or disclosure of personal data. Compliance impacts would only occur if exploitation led to data breaches, which is not described in the provided context.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update librtmp to a patched version beyond 2.6. If updating is not possible, restrict network access to trusted RTMP servers only. Implement deep packet inspection to filter malformed AMF0 data. Monitor for suspicious RTMP traffic patterns that may indicate exploitation attempts.
