Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves insufficient randomness in session identifiers used by certain NETGEAR Extender models. An attacker with network access, such as WiFi credentials, can predict these session IDs and hijack an authenticated administrator session on the web management portal.

Detection Guidance

Detecting insufficient session randomness requires checking for predictable session tokens in web traffic. Monitor network traffic for repeated or sequential session IDs in HTTP responses from the NETGEAR Extender web management portal. Use tools like Wireshark to capture and analyze HTTP headers for session cookies or tokens. Verify if session IDs follow a predictable pattern or sequence.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain unauthorized access to the web management portal, allowing them to change settings, monitor network traffic, or perform other administrative actions without permission. This could lead to loss of control over the network and potential data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face legal penalties, loss of trust, and increased scrutiny for failing to protect user data adequately.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the firmware of affected NETGEAR Extender models (EX3700, EX6120) to the latest version. Disable remote administration access to the web management portal if not required. Ensure strong, unique WiFi credentials are used to limit unauthorized network access. Monitor for suspicious activity or unauthorized sessions in the admin portal logs.
